Being too assertive usually happens if we tend to jump in too quickly to help someone. It is okay to jump in, but a leader should not just fix a situation, but should be helping someone sift through the details of the situation/problem they are facing by asking questions. Although it may be challenging, it is indeed a necessary step in helping a others become a problem-solver. When we are working with someone in diagnosing a problem or situation and attempting to identify the root cause(s) for the issue(s), it is analogous to when we go to a doctor. As an example, we may have been having a persistent cough for a week or more. What we want is for the doctor to identify the root cause of the cough. We do not want him/her to just prescribe something for the symptoms. It would be our desire for the doctor to correctly diagnose what is actually causing the problem and not just speculate. Guiding someone in how to properly problem-solve can be very rewarding. The tendency though can be to jump in and “fix it” ourselves by providing answers.On the flip-side, being too passive results in the leader sitting back too long and not being involved with someone when they are struggling with a problem.
